After several years of planning, budgeting and designing, we have finally kicked off construction of the new Human Ecology Building! The first phase of construction has begun: a 290-car underground parking garage.
With an estimated completion of 2012, the new building will provide state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research in science and design. It will be connected to Martha Van Rensselaer Hall through an inner courtyard and by way of the Commons, a large, open, multipurpose interior space created to foster and strengthen the Human Ecology community.
The building will house a new art gallery to showcase the work of Human Ecology students and faculty, research and teaching laboratories, design studios, a wood shop, conference and seminar space for the entire College, and administrative and faculty offices for the department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design. A terrace and exterior walkway along the north side of the building will provide extensive outdoor public space and expansive views across Beebe Lake and North Campus.
Take a look inside for more pictures of this exciting expansion and enhancement of Human Ecology’s physical campus. You will also find information about upcoming events, including Reunion (years ending in 3 & 8) and the Human Ecology Alumni Association Annual Meeting.

Please mark your calendars to join us for the Human Ecology Alumni Association (HEAA) Annual Meeting in New York City.
The HEAA will honor the recipients of the 2008 Helen Bull Vandervort Alumni Achievement Award and 2008 Recent Alumnus Achievement Award.
This year’s program will also feature Human Development Professors Charles Brainerd and Valerie Reyna to discuss the groundbreaking Law, Psychology & Human Development (LPHD) program, a collaborative graduate concentration uniting the College of Human Ecology with the College of Arts & Sciences and the Cornell Law School.
The LPHD program is the top program of its kind in the country, and it exemplifies Cornell’s long history of leadership in the interdisciplinary field of law, psychology, and human development. Cornell possesses a unique cluster of faculty who have conducted award-winning research on topics such as child abuse and neglect, death penalty exemptions for juveniles and disabled persons, children’s testimony, false memories in police interviews and interrogations, unreliability of eyewitness identifications, and jury decision making.
